COURSE NO.1

ON FARM DISEASES DIAGNOSIS

Duration: 2 Weeks

Target group: Farmers, Agricultural Extension Officers and  Seed Growers

ORGANISATION OF THE COURSE AND CONTENTS 

The following topics are covered in details through Lectures, practicals and discussions.

Common diseases for selected crops (vegetables, fruits, cereals, legumes and cash crops)

  • Field diseases diagnosis (Fungal, Bacterial, viral and Nematodes)
  • Seed quality (Purity, Germination Moisture content and Vigour)
  • Diseases management and practices (Cultural, Chemical, Biological and Physical)

Training fee: TSH 500,000 for Tanzanians and 300 USD for foreigners will cover tuition and laboratory consumables. 

COURSE NO.2

SEED  PATHOLOGY & SEED TECHNOLOGY

Duration: 4 weeks

Target group: Field officers, Technicians, Agricultural Extension officers, Seed specialists, and Plant Quarantine Officers

ORGANISATION OF THE COURSES AND CONTENTS

The following topics are covered in details through Lectures, practicals and discussions.

  • Inspection of dry seeds
  • Sampling techniques
  • Seed Germination and Vigour tests
  • Various seed testing techniques
  • Seed health testing techniques
  • Diagnosis of diseases caused by seed-borne pathogens
  • Location of seed-borne pathogens and their Isolation  from seeds and infected plant parts
  • Field diseases diagnosis methodologies

Training fee: TSH 1,500,000 for Tanzanians and 800 USD for foreigners will cover tuition and laboratory consumables. 

COURSE NO.3

PLANT QUARANTINE

Duration: 4 weeks

Target group: Plant quarantine officers/ Plant and germplasm inspectors/Extension officers/Seed specialists

ORGANISATION OF THE COURSES AND CONTENTS

The following topics are covered in details through Lectures, practicals and discussions.

Principles of plant quarantine: Concepts and policies, introduction, interception and inspection of seed-borne diseases at ports of entry. Introduction of plant pathogens with impact to agriculture. Examples of quarantine pathogens for Tanzania and other African countries. 

Plant quarantine legislation: Legal terms of seed legislation, Quarantine documents(permits, phytosanitary certificates and colour codes),international seed quality certificates, field inspection and tolerance levels.

Post-entry quarantine: Sources and types of propagating materials, precautionary measures taken during importation of germplasm, design of screen houses for post-entry quarantine, seed health testing in plant quarantine, seed treatment/fumigation techniques, and pest risk analysis.

Training fee: TSH 1,500,000 for Tanzanians and 800USD for foreigners will cover tuition and laboratory consumables. This excludes Accommodation, meals and transport

 

PLANT CLINIC SERVICES OFFERED BY AFSHC

The Centre also offers services for PLANT CLINIC on daily bases. This involves diagnosing of any diseased plant or seed samples from different clients in order to identify the causal pathogen and suggest for management options at the farm level.

Submit your sample for disease diagnosis at our state of the art laboratories located within the vicinities of our centre. We will issue a detailed diagnostic report that will contain the identity of the pathogen and the required management practices.

You can also submit images or videos of damaged plants or seeds for disease diagnosis. Images should be of good quality. If sending images of damages done by an insect, try and get an images of insects present in your field to submit a digital sample,
